Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was a French Post-Impressionist painter, printmaker,
draughtsman, illustrator, and lithographer ( 1864 – 1901). He became an artist because of
a physical deformity which left him unable to participate in many physical activities. Lautrec was a privileged young man who was part of the theatrical life-style  of Paris in the late 1800s.  He produced a range of innovative, exciting, and provocative images of the modern and sometimes decadent life of those times. His work, even when created for advertising was recognised as art, commented on by critics, and collected and exhibited in galleries.
The lithograph poster ‘ Lautrec reine de joie ‘ translates in English to ‘Lautrec Queen of Joy’. It was first printed in 1892 in a huge print run for its time, estimated  at between one and three thousand prints. The image depicts a scene from the novel ‘The Queen of joy, the world of easy virtue’,  by the polish writer Victor Joze, that the poster was advertising. In the image a female prostitute sits on a large mans lap, giving him a kiss. They are  in a restaurant sitting at a table, set for dining. In this scene the prostitute is negotiating with the man, a wealthy banker, how much she will be paid.
Lithographs had become popular for both advertising and artwork by the 1890’s because they could reproduce multiple copies of  detailed artwork.

“Lithography works on the principle that grease and water repel each other. There is no carving involved. The artist draws on a stone with a greasy crayon and then covers the stone with a thin film of water. The oily ink will stick to the greasy image but not to the water-covered areas.”artsmia (2008).
The 1890’s was a period in France when anti-semitism was rife and Lautrecs poster is an example of how attitudes and art of the times showed the Jewish people as greedy and rich. ‘1890s, the Dreyfus decade in which anti-Semitic rhetoric soared’..Ruth E. Iskin.(2009)
In this example this is amplified by the banker also being portrayed as fat which was equated with greed. This lithograph advertisement was targeted  towards an audience of book readers who were very possibly non jewish as the book held significant anti Jewish sentiment. Readership would have been for the wealthy and literate, trendy, riskay  and fashionable, possibly elite. It ‘Represents an elderly banker as a lascivious, balding, pot-bellied Jew whose ethnic nose is pinned down by a vigorous kiss from a dark-haired, red-lipped courtesan” ‘Ruth E. Iskin .(2009) This was a key scene in the story, and makes the content externally visible.

Art Nouveau was popular throughout Europe during the period of 1890-1910. "Art Nouveau" meaning "new art" in French was a  new style, had a prolific global impact and followed on from the impressionist movement.
The industrial, and in France, the political revolution had brought about huge changes to society. Art reflected these changes both with the influences from the pacific and Japan and the widening of visual topics and style.
“Its serious adherents viewed it as the answer to a serious problem that had become apparent by the end of the 19th century: to find a style suitable for the industrial age rather than, as the academically trained architects of the Parisian Ecole des Beaux-Arts were doing, applying past styles to contemporary works.” E. M. Plunkett (1997)

Lautrec may have been instructed on which scene would be depicted in lithograph or he may have made the decision himself. The composition and layout is off balance almost lopsided. It has an asymmetrical balance. Art Nouveau was inspired by natural organic shapes and forms this is reflected in the image by the curves and organic brush strokes, highly linear shapes with emphasis on contours. The poster  attracts attention with high contrast vibrant colors red, yellow and rich blacks.

“The lithograph presents a radically flattened space, figures with virtually no graduated shading, Japanese-inspired simplifications, clear silhouettes, and stark colors.”Ruth E Iskin(2009)
The main focal point is the woman’s face and the kiss. Our eyes wander over this area before referring to the text, then focus again on the entire image. The bright dress the woman wears draws emphasis to her.The  upper background of bright colour attracts the viewers eye to the characters who tell a story. The texture is flat and in perspective with the second man being smaller in the distance.

Price my journey is an idea I've come up with for a mobile app and website and a browser addon. The app adds new functionality to google maps helping you work out how much it’ll cost you to drive places and how much co2 will be emitted during the journey. "Price My Journey" the name of the app can help you make informed decisions everyday so you can minimise your impact on the environment, by making your aware of how much you could save by driving a smaller car, living closer to work or generally driving less. Biking or walking more where possible. You your family and friends can save money, get fit and do good by the environment by using Price My Journey.

Price My Journey lets you choose your car from it’s database and helps you work out exactly how much it’ll cost you to get from place to place as well as making you more aware of your environment without you having to do any calculating. Price My Journey shows you current local fuel prices it can even help you divide up your trip cost between your friends.

Christo & Jeanne-Claude

I learned a lot about the artists Christo and Jeanne Claude wile writing my speech. Christo and Jeanne Claude are New Realism Installation Artists who  have spent their lives devoted to their huge self funded temporary projects that sometimes cost millions of dollars to create. They were leaders, who created jobs for people and showed attributes like hard work and determination. Some of their works took years to fund and or be accepted. Mostly they used a wrapping technique in their art, this is interesting and unlike anything I had come across before. It felt good to be able to share my thoughts with the class.

Art Nouveau was popular throughout europe during the period of 1890-1910 the movement had a global influence. "Art Nouveau" meaning "new art" in french was marketed as a modern style and a prolific impact throughout the all the creative professions architecture, interior design, furniture, jewellery, textiles, and the visual arts.
all adopted the Art Nouveau and local variants also developed.
The philosophy behind Art Nouveau was that art should be a way of life. Artists were inspired by natural forms and structures they combine both the fine arts and applied arts. Architects of the period didn’t simply use curved lines in their designs they went further by harmonizing the building with the surrounding natural environment. Art Nouveau was  replaced by 20th-century Modernism. The Art Nouveau style is known as the transition between the Neo Classicism and Modernism.

1860–1939 Czech artist Alphonse Mucha based in Paris produced lithographed posters which had a strong influence on the style.

“He is perhaps the most famous, or infamous, artist alive. To some a genius, to others a vandal. Always controversial, he inspires admiration and provokes outrage in equal measure.”(Joseph,2008,para1). Banksy became involved in graffiti art during the aerosol boom of the late 1980s in Bristol. He Started off in the classic New York style. When he started to stencil  he says he felt the power, ruthlessness and efficiency, it was perfect, stencils are more political they have been used to start revolutions. Banksys work is mostly political and often humorous and pulls some ridiculous stunts. At London Zoo, he climbed into the penguin enclosure and painted "We're bored of fish" in seven foot high letters. His art has appeared in cities around the world  and he has collaborated with other artists, anti-war, anti-capitalist or anti-establishment messages appear in most work. Banksy does not sell photos of street graffiti.  Art auctioneers have been known to sell his street art on location and leave its removal in the hands of the winning bidder. His identity has been kept a secret , His agent has refused to confirm or deny reports of the true identity of the artist  it has been widely reported and is thought to be Robert Banks, Robin Gunningham. Bankys himself states, On his website “I am unable to comment on who may or may not be Banksy, but anyone described as being ‘good at drawing’ doesn’t sound like Banksy to me”.

Born in 1960 Brooklyn New York ,Basquiat quickly rose to fame with his graffiti at a time when the art market began to boom and art became the interest of many investors. As an early graffiti artist he literally exploded onto the art scene this sudden fame and money was difficult for him to control and comprehend and many people think this may have been a contributing factor to his death of an  overdose at only 27 .

He was accused by friends of selling out of the graffiti movement by becoming a part of the established art scene .Early on in his career he met Andy Warhole and other prominent figures in the art scene of the time. In 1977 he was 17 and his Samo graffiti was published in the news .In 1980 he made his entry into the established art scene as part of the time square show. His choice of heroes in his art ranged from black musicians and sports men whom he honoured to martyrs and victims of society or their own life styles .His talent was remarkable given his lack of formal artistic education. His style and expression showed fieriness, he could depict the terrifying ,the shattered and the unconnected and often used  demolition and contempt for any kind of visual unity. One of his influences had been Picasso and another Jackson Pollock who's influences  you can see in his work.

Models that don't require a living wage

Stock Photography for Advertising is expensive you need models and expensive equipment, the right location and light not to mention experience and time to take great photo's. Capturing the perfect moment can be difficult.

Now days 3d models can look super detailed and realistic. These 3d models are often more beautiful then people you are able to photograph, without going to a modelling agency. You wouldn't have to worry about consent from 3d models or need to do anything inside of Photoshop. The girls on the covers of magazines mayaswelll be fake by the time designers have finished photoshoping them.

How about an 3d space where you can arrange models, scroll through the library of photo realistic models and choose a model you would like to work with. Next choose their facial expressions, select a body stance pre set you can edit each part of the model by simply clicking the the model joints will appear and can be dragged  into a new position. Now that we have chosen the models stance we can save it and dress them up out of the wardrobe. Options to add more models to the 3d space camera camera angles focus and lighting effects etc. Once you have composed the image you are able to move out of 3d space and choose background images for the scene eyes can be moved in any direction.

3d Models can look like photo's that have been edited in Photoshop "picture perfect" as soon as you snap I'm surprised that these types of models aren't used extensively in stock photo library's if you organised the right system to photograph models in different stances and every conceivably angle you could other people could upload there models background and angles. people in editing photo's could start off picture perfect images models could be used in advertising more- do you ever upload hd images to stock photo libraries.

This require a lot of work, i.e photographing models in every conceivable pose with varying DOF. This would be a great tool but the time and cost would be quite prohibitive.

Colour scheme is analogous this means that colours appear in the colour wheel beside each other, blue and green feel cool and refreshing together and have strong associations with nature. Bright green excites the eye it is a very active colour this is emphasizes the product well also because the rock is quite dark contrast is high in this area also

simplifying and isolation of the subjects by selective focus which has subduing the background slightly out of focus.

Balance is created simply by an even amount of subject interest throughout and also balance of positive and negative space which fills the frame exactly like talked about in the hand out it feels as if you are too close to the situation  this idea is also created by the models not making eye contact  this puts the viewer into observation mode  a glimpse into a thoughtful private moment because the male is looking outside the frame it creates an element of unknown.

High contrast and bright colour create interest and snap,

Lines creates be the models lims  are leading from the outside edges of the image towards subjects faces the women with a facial expression of bliss and the man a thoughtful expression. Form and unity is achieved by the overlapping of models

Arms crossed is normally defensive body language, in this image however females body language suggests that she is simply holding onto that moment luxuriating in it.

The pose from the man looking out thoughtfully reaching out looks very similar “michelangelo creation of adam” actually alot of this brands advertising reminds me of michelangelo

A dramatic angle, low angle which makes people look more dominant and powerful is achieved by interesting means models are lying down eg if you photographing a person sometimes it's easier to get them to move.

The action and movement is captured in background sea spray in mid flight

Texture is created here also as light reflects as it catches the edges of hard wet rocks.

Clouds have been photoshopped into the water discreetly to enhance the effect

closeness, carefree, contemplation, expression, interaction, leisure, relaxation, thoughtful
